Popis: | Studies of sheet glass strength during bending tests and microstrength determined at contact with a sphere are performed. Measurements are carried out on glass with different surface conditions. It is established that the microstrength of glass with surface defects (under initial conditions or upon imparting a network of defects by friction) is almost an order of magnitude higher than that during bending tests. On the other hand, it is demonstrated that the microstrength of glass with a defect-free surface (obtained by etching in HF) is twofold lower than the glass bending strength. Deposition of a soft polymer coating enables one to increase significantly the resistance to crack formation on the glass surface and produce a maximal tensile stress at the contact zone boundary equal to the bending strength of glass with a defect-free surface. |
