Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the cytopathic effect (CPE) of animal viruses. Interactions between viruses and susceptible cells in tissue cultures often result in cellular alterations referred to as CPE. Cytopathic action is a common manifestation of virus infectivity and is usually accompanied by the synthesis of fully infectious virus particles or of noninfectious virus materials. Any attempt to characterize the cytopathic action of animal viruses must take into consideration the virus, the host, and the environment. Different features of viral CPE are not equally affected by variations in host and environmental conditions or by viral mutations. The most constant features are represented by cytological lesions reflecting the sites of viral replication and maturation. These processes are frequently made apparent by the pattern of cellular degeneration or by the formation of inclusion bodies, which are highly characteristic of the action of certain groups of viruses. The fact that such alterations may represent residual lesions varying in appearance according to fixation techniques does not diminish their diagnostic value. An attempt to characterize the CPE of major virus groups is presented. |
