The article analyzes some aspects about the history of the normal regional courses for the formation of rural primary teachers in the state of Maranhao, Brazil. With systematization of statistical data produced by INEP/MEC between 1949 and 1960, it was possible to verify the implementation of Regional/Rural Normal Schools in Maranhao, from the second half of the 1950s. It was found, however, that the slow diffusion of schools with normal regional courses was restricted to the private sector, in the northwest and central-south regions of the state. The Catholic Church, through religious congregations, managed the formation of the rural primary teaching in Maranhao, with legal and financial counterparts from the public authorities. |
