Significant advances in the treatment of certain disseminated malignancies have been accompanied by increased awareness of the consequences of inadequate antiemetic therapy. In some patients, nausea and vomiting may lead to noncompliance with treatment regimens, and these complications commonly impose mental and physical suffering that diminishes the quality of life. The extent to which medical complications are associated with vomiting depends upon its severity and duration; these complications can include esophageal tears, bone fractures, malnutrition, and major fluid and electrolyte derangements. |
