This syllabus on the history of North West Af rica in the age of European penetration and coloni zation was first written as a correspondence course for the office of Independent Study at the University of Georgia. It might well be used as a model syllabus for regular classroom use, especially in colleges and univer sities where Maghribi Studies are considered peripheral. It was produced by the author in cooperation with his students in a regularly scheduled class. Students reacted to various parts of the syllabus and helped make "more relevant" the outline and suggested readings. Miss Eliza beth Powell, who supervises the office of Independent Study, gave endorsement of my wish to publish the es sential portion of the original syllabus. Changes involved eliminating specific assignments designed for correspondence students and three appen dices which were model assignments on which students were to exercise their abilities for critical analysis. Three comparative book reviews written by some of my stu dents were published in The Muslim World, October, 1963, pp. 323-326. |
