The dispersion of non-magnetic spheres in a ferrofluid results in the formation of holes with an apparent induced diamagnetic moment, which we refer to as `Superdiamagnetism'. This effect is demonstrated by means of comparison of the results of AC susceptibility measurements performed on colloidal samples of a water-based ferrofluid with and without monodispersed polystyrene spheres. The use of the magnetic analogue of the Gunther and Heinrich formula for the complex dielectric constant of a composite dielectric enabled the volume fraction of spheres in the composite mixture to be determined. It is demonstrated that the observed phenomenon is not simply a dilution effect. |
