Conservation tillage offers economical and erosion-control advantages to peanut ( Arachis hypogaea L.) growers, provided it does not reduce yield. An on-farm research program was initiated in 1982 in Alabama to compare the effects of reduced tillage and conventional tillage on yield, weed pressure, disease intensity and nematode numbers. Results from 17 experiments during 1982–1986 showed reduced tillage increased yield at 3 sites, decreased yield at 5 sites, and had no effect at 9 sites. Reduced tillage did not increase disease intensity or nematode numbers. Weed control was excellent, and weed competition was judged to have adversely affected yield at only one site, where crabgrass ( Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scep.) control was delayed in early season of wet weather. |
