This paper discusses the shortcomings at high temperature of the existing sealing materials and introduces a novel, evolving, high temperature sealing material technology based upon the use chemically exfoliated vermiculite as an inorganic binder. The general properties of the materials developed on the basis of this technology are discussed and test data for sheet, spiral wound and covered serrated metal cored gaskets is presented.
