Absorption lineshape of a trapped and cooled ion

Popis: The correlation function and the shape of the absorption spectrum of an ion in a trap cooled by a laser beam are calculated. The stochastic ion motion caused by the cooling process and by the collisions with the background gas particles is described by a Fokker-Planck equation. Two cases of continuous and interrupted cooling are investigated. In the first case the laser beam continuously cools the ion during the absorption investigation. In the second case the cooling laser beam is turned off before the beginning of the absorption investigation and the collisions with the particles of background gas heat up the cooled ion.
