Popis: | Systematic differences exist in the vibrational transitions of water molecules that are associated with the hydration of solutes containing varying numbers of methylene or methyl groups. Model solutions studied contained individual members of a series of alkanesulfonates. Observed shifts in the vibrational intensities and frequencies of solvating water molecules are consistent with an increase in the number of solvent-solvent intermolecular hydrogen bonds as the hydrocarbon moiety of the alkanesulfonate increases in size |
