Popis: | We here consider the principal evidence for the representation of journeys, both on monumental and movable items, in pagan and profane as well as, of course, Christian contexts, where they numerically dominate, though are not so widespread. It appears that a true documentary aspect of these representations is rather limited, due to the frequent repetition of more or less ancient models. Only the military movements on the column of Arcadius and the translation of relics on an ivory plaque now preserved in Trier positively stand apart in this respect. Otherwise, it can be seen clearly enough that, in representing some of the travel related events – or any event interpretable as such –, the concern to emphasize the favour of a divine power was primarily behind what was depicted.
