Some bottom features found in the northern Adriatic Sea are described and their formation is discussed. A field of sand waves at a depth of 16 m, with their crests perpendicular to the shore, is attributed to the littoral current that was temporarily increased because of a storm surge and a large outflow of the local rivers. A sequential series of ridges, found offshore, is interpreted as bars due to a very large storm. These forms can be modified only by a stronger meteorological event. The possibility of such a storm is continuously decreasing because of the contemporary increasing of the local depth. Therefore there must have been a certain storm, the bottom effects of which are now practically permanent. Some periodic groupings of different bottom materials on a flat sandy zone are shown to be consequent to the alternating bottom water motion due to surface gravity waves. |
