Popis: | Saturated and olefinic hydrocarbons in the top sections of contemporary sediments from four stations in the Baltic Sea (Teili-1, F-81, EB-1 and XV-1) were analysed by capillary gas chromatography and GC/MS techniques. The 0–2, 2–4, 4–5 and 10–11 cm sections showed a small unresolved complex mixture (UCM), however, in all these sections a strong predominance of odd over even carbon-numbered compounds exists, indicating an insignificant petroleum hydrocarbon input in the areas studied. The resolved hydrocarbons are of mixed marine autochthonous and terrigenous origin. The 0–5 cm sections contained the highest proportions of short-chain and branched-chain hydrocarbons derived mostly from algae and bacteria. In general, an increase was observed in the ratios of saturated to unsaturated and of longer-chain to short-chain hydrocarbons with increasing depth because of the facile diagenesis of unsaturated components and faster biodegradation of short-chain hydrocarbons. In addition, between one and seven hydrocarbons, the exact structure of which could not be assigned, were detected in the samples. Most of these components were cyclic and unsaturated and a number were triterpenes. |
