In experiment 2a (https://osf.io/wtmcg), we found out that expecting to do well and receiving success feedback had a positive influence on learning. On the other hand, expecting to do well or poorly did not mitigate the detrimental effects of failure feedback. An important feature of this experiment was that the task was a memorization task with made-up symbols which included math symbols. Participants might have tried to induce a rule from the feedback they received during the training while there were actually no rules to learn. Building upon experiment 2a, we now investigate whether similar results hold in a rule-based task. |
