The thermal impact of GIC on the tertiary windings of power transformers has been an area of great interest to the power Industry. This impact is caused by circulating currents induced in the $\Delta$ – connected tertiary windings as consequence to cores of the 3 single-phase transformers in a bank, or the three core limbs of a 3-phase transformer, become saturated due to flow of GIC at different instances on a cycle [1].This phenomenon has been investigated by the Authors of this paper. The investigations performed and results of these investigations are presented in this paper. The results indicate possible significant thermal impact in some transformer designs when exposed to high levels of GIC. It is hoped that the data and information presented in this paper provide better understanding of this important aspect of thermal impact of GIC on Power transformers. |
