A Gossypol-hydrazone compound and its sensing properties towards metal ions and nitro-phenolic compounds

Popis: In this work, the (+/-) gossypol extracted from cotton seeds was reacted with 4-pyridinecarbo hydrazide to obtain a 4-pyridinecarboxylic acid hydrazone of (+/-) gossypol (GYP). The structure of the compound was characterized by spectroscopic and analytic methods. Sensing ability of the compound towards metal ions was investigated by the colorimetric and spectroscopic methods. The receptor exhibited ‘‘on–off’’ fluorescent responses toward Co(II) in MeOH/water mixture. The complexation of GYP with Cu(II) or Co(II) caused a distinguishable color change under daylight and UV-radiation, respectively. Moreover, the compound was screened as fluorescent probe for the sensing of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP), 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP), 4-nitrophenol (NP) in solution. The compound exhibited the highest sensitivity (Ksv = 1.1 × 10−5 M−1) and selectivity towards TNP (LOD = 0.59 µ).
