Popis: Kiwifruit and kiwiberry are woody perennial vines from genus Actinidia, characterized by excessive vegetative vigor, prolonged juvenility and low productivity. As recently domesticated horticultural crops, they have a short history of breeding, limited genetic resources and little knowledge about genetic and molecular regulation of development and flowering. At the same time, accelerated systematic breeding provides opportunities for rapid development of improved cultivars, better suited for different growing conditions and with higher fruit yield, quality and health benefits. Recent studies in the diploid kiwifruit, Actinidia chinensis, identified key flowering time genes, which can be targeted to accelerate maturity and manipulate growth, flowering and productivity. This review provides a summary of these findings and discusses implications for future breeding strategies.
