A novel attempt is made to directly measure the contact area of solid bodies by relating it to the electrical contact resistance. This method was used by F. P. Bowden and D. Tabor in the 1930s already. We confined the setup by use of low conductive thin film coatings. This way it is possible to point out the influence of contact area in contrast to incidental contaminations. By use of wear resistant coatings it will be possible to measure the contact area in sliding contacts as well. New measurements and calculations are compared with the original setup and model for contact resistance and contact area, respectively. (© 2008 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim) |
