Emergency Substitutions for Laying Mash in the Diet of White Leghorn Pullets

Popis: IN ANTICIPATION of a possible shortage of mash for laying stock during emergency periods due to a temporary lack of materials or a breakdown in transportation, and in the absence of any definite information on the effect of a temporary cessation of mash feeding, or the effect of possible substitutes for it, trials herein reported were conducted on White Leghorn pullets during the late winter and spring of 1943. The first test, starting January 7, was conducted with four pens of March-hatched pullets which were being fed on the free-choice system, with a constant supply of mash, 2 oats, and a mixture of equal parts of cracked yellow corn and wheat in separate hoppers. One pen was continued on mash as a check unit, while, in the other three, the mash was removed. In one of these, wheat bran was substituted for mash; in another the substitute consisted of a mixture . . .
