Popis: Fourteen cancer patients with a discrete increase in serum protein on paper electrophoresis were studied for the presence of multiple myeloma. The abnormal proteins were indistinguishable from globulins produced in patients with myeloma. Five cases had osteolytic bone lesions and appeared to have coincident myeloma. One case had metastatic osteolytic disease and 8 cases were free of bone disease on roentgenogram. All cases had abnormal bone marrows with varying increases in lymphocytes and plasma cells. A unifying concept was that hyperplasia of a single clone of plasma cells or lymphocytes had occurred in each case either independent of or for factors related to the malignancy. It appeared that in the absence of secondary bone destruction, clonal hyperplasia did not necessarily represent malignancy of the immunocytic cell.
