Chapter 3 explores the stories of Khrist Bhakta origins, oral histories compiled during the author’s first years of fieldwork. The chapter aims to reveal the actors involved in the healings that took place in the early 1990s, early precipitating incidents, whence the community formed, and generally, the movement’s conditions of possibility. It further shows the piecemeal way the Āśram grew to accommodate devotees. Significantly, though not surprisingly, not everyone recalls or understands the birth of the movement in the same way, pointing to the epistemological challenges attending to understanding the birth of even recent religious movements, a fact which should at least temper one’s certainties when dealing with devotional movements of earlier eras. |
