Popis: Matisse's four large bas reliefs, commonly known as the Backs, are a distinctive part of the master's oeuvre. They are his largest works of sculpture and they span a period of some twenty years (1909–1929), making them Matisse's most long-lived single sculptural project.1 Despite the vast literature on Matisse, however, this work had not been analyzed in detail until Professor Elsen's recent article, which considers the Backs in relation to Matisse's development as a sculptor.2 The four Backs seem at least as relevant to the development of Matisse's painting as to his sculpture, in fact, to me they seem more like three-dimensional realizations of painted space than solutions to sculptural problems.3 This paper will discuss the development of each of the four images of the Back in relation to the contemporaneous development of Matisse's painting, with special consideration given to the significance of Back IV.
