Heat exchanger piles are foundation piles which can be used to transfer heat with the surrounding ground for heating and/or cooling purpose. The design of heat exchanger pile systems is described in detail and the problematic related to the thermal and mechanical effects is exposed. A numerical simulation model, developed and validated against measurements of existing installations, is presented. A methodology is established for the determination of the numerous parameters which are required for the simulation of such systems. Based on the analysis of a typical system, a set of recommendations and rules for the sizing of a pre-project are deduced. The influence of thermal solicitations on the mechanical behaviour of the piles are discussed. This study deals only with installations built in water saturated ground layers. A technical feasibility study of a heat exchanger pile system is presented. It highlights the difficulty in establishing a set of rules for the design of the thermal installation ... |
