Identification of mould species is a time consuming procedure, which usually takes at least 14 days, including isolation and subculturing. We have investigated the possibility of performing identification directly on the isolation media, using TLC screening of secondary metabolite profiles. An identification procedure is proposed using standard isolation media, based on comparison of secondary metabolite profiles from a selected number of isolates. The procedure has been tested on a number of food samples, and a high degree of agreement was found with results from normal identification procedures with pure cultures. An international testing of this identification procedure is proposed and we are willing to provide test samples and photos of standard secondary metabolite profiles. |
