Popis: | A population of about 50 Hipposideros ridleyi was located in a lowland peat forest in Malaysia. Females gave birth concurrently with several other species of bats. A compilation of new and published pregnancy and nursing data indicates that two reproductive periods occur yearly in Malaysian Microchiroptera. Hipposideros ridleyi is known from a single specimen collected in 1910 in the Botanic Gardens, Singapore (Hill 1963, Medway 1969). The curious face with a concave circular disk between and anterior to the nostrils distinguishes it from all other hipposiderids. From October 1974 to July 1975, caves, buildings, and drainage pipes were searched for bats in a 50 km radius of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. On 24 April, a concentration of about 50 H. ridleyi was located approximately 40 km northwest of Kuala Lumpur amidst small patches of lowland peat forest. All the bats were in 38 cm diameter drainage pipes beneath a 10 km stretch of road and spaced about 10-12 cm apart while roosting. Six sightings of groups in 4 pipes (0.7, 3.9 and 0.3 km apart) consisted of 1, 5, 6, 12, 14, and 15 individuals. Adult males were absent. A group of 15 captured and released on 2 July included 8 adult females and 6 fledgling (4 o', 2 i). On 24 and 29 April, 12 adult females were netted, and all but two had one young attached (table 1).
