The motivation for the study of the effects of convective flow on the morphological stability of a crystal-melt interface is the desire to be able to grow alloy single crystals which are free from cellular sub-structure. There is a particular and pressing need to be able to grow homogeneous high-quality single crystals of ternary III-V compounds such as Gai-xIn×As for use as substrates in the fabrication of a range of opto-electronic devices. In this paper, the theory of coupling between natural convection and morphological instability is briefly reviewed together with some relevant experimental evidence. Ways in which the theory might be usefully extended to include the effects of additional control parameters which could advantageously affect morphological stability are indicated. |
