A field study at Ciudad Obregon, Mexico, was conducted to determine the effect of yellow-berry percentage (0, 33, 66 and 100%) on the emergence and seedling vigor of 3 bread-wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars. Early seedling growth was unaffected by yellow-berry %. When compared to normal kernels, all levels of yellow-berry significantly reduce relative emergence. The effect was not altered by genotype. There was little difference in relative emergence among yellow-berry levels (33–100%). Protein content, negatively correlated to yellow-berry %, was a better indicator of emergence potential. However, yellow-berry level can be easily used by farmers as a criterion for selecting quality seedlots. |
