Popis: The breakdown of air insulation under high frequency fields was treated by many workers1,2,3. Nasser reported1 that below a certain frequency the alternating voltage will not have enough time to reverse the direction of field once the breakdown process has been initiated. That frequency was said to be invyrsely proportional to gap spacing. A critical frequency was determined1 below which the breakdown mechanism is slightly modified by the longer presence of some positive ions resulting in a slight reduction in breakdown voltage. Beyond the critical frequency the ion space charge oscillates and new avalanches will then cause it to grow until instability and breakdown occurs under yet smaller voltages.
