Popis: This chapter summarizes our analysis of current strengths and challenges to laws, public policies, and services for IPV in Colombia, South America. Although national surveys indicate that women are more frequently victimized, there are also recent data showing moderate to high rates of male victimization as well as IPV in same-sex couples. During the last three decades, there have been two approaches to the development of laws and policies for IPV in Colombia: a family-centered and a gender-informed approach. These approaches differ in their conceptualization of IPV, services provided for victims, and the ways in which public agencies working under each approach operate. Current policies have fostered public awareness of IPV and increased services available for women and GLBTI+ individuals. Some challenges for policy development are to improve coordination among service and legal enforcement agencies, provide services for perpetrators, and increase efforts on IPV prevention. Lastly, we make recommendations for future research on IPV interventions and emphasize the importance of collaboration between researchers and policy makers in order to increase the use of evidence-based approaches to IPV treatment and prevention in Colombia.
