We demonstrate the enhancement in the femtosecond laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) signals of a liquid sample using gold nanoparticles. The mean sizes of nanoparticles fabricated using the technique of femtosecond laser ablation were in the range of 10–15 nm. LIBS spectra of acetonitrile dissolved in water at different ratios were recorded. The intense peak at 389.4 nm in the CN violet band was used for comparison. As the LIBs signal intensity depends on the density and the thermal conductivity of the material the strength of LIBS signals in liquid form is low in general. It is observed the addition of nanoparticles enhanced the LIBS signals intensity by ~2 times. We present the details of these experiments and the enhancements observed. |
