Popis: Silver and calcium fluoride thin films as well as Ag/CaFx (with x=1.85) multilayer films have been deposited on superalloy substrates by r.f. sputtering of Ag and CaF2 targets in argon. The friction coefficient and wear resistance of superalloy disks coated with these sputter-deposited thin films were measured at room temperature and 500°C in air by using an alumina ball-on-disk test apparatus. The average friction coefficient value of Ag and CaFx films was in the range 0.14–0.42 depending on the film thickness and test temperature. The Ag/CaFx multilayer films exhibited a stable friction coefficient of 0.35 at room temperature and 500°C. These stacked structures are very attractive for lubrication of mechanical systems with high precision tolerance in large temperature ranges, in air. The friction mechanisms and some aspects of wear behaviour of these sputter-deposited thin films are analysed and discussed.
