Popis: In this paper, we describe experiments to evaluate the use of a laser interferometer as a quantitative probe of nonlinear ultrasonic propagation. Although other detection methods for nonlinear ultrasonics have been in use for several years — most notably capacitive and piezoelectric receivers — interferometric detection provides advantages not available with these methods. The interferometer provides a direct means of absolute amplitude calibration, is noncontacting, possesses a wide bandwidth, requires less extensive sample preparation than the capacitive method, and affords excellent spatial resolution.
