ANALYSING THE OPERATION OF RESIDENTIAL PHOTOVOLTAIC BATTERY STORAGE SYSTEMS IN CYPRUS

Popis: As the number of Photovoltaic (PV) systems in the residential building sector increases, various technical issues might arise to the power network due to their uncontrollable operation. In this context, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs) coupled with PVs have gained significant attention in recent years, as a promising solution to mitigate the mismatch between generation and demand. This paper analyses the first year of operation of residential PV-BESS pilots in Cyprus. Specifically, the results quantify the contribution of the BESS to the households energy self-consumption and self-sufficiency increase, leading in more than half of the demand to be covered by the PV-BESS for both households during the studied period. Moreover, the paper presents the results of a parametric analysis for the estimation of the Self-Consumption (SCR) and Self-Sufficiency Ratios (SSR) for various PV-BESS sizes. The outcomes demonstrate that for PV-BESS sizes above a specific threshold, there is no significant increase in the households SCR and SSR and that as the SSR increases, the SCR is decreased resulting to a specific PV-BESS size which optimises both indicators.
