The practice of lobola and the oppression of women in the name of religion or cultural practices is a product of a distorted hermeneutical interpretation of the biblical and cultural perceptions on marriage. The cultural value of lobola does not lie in the logic of power that has historically characterized the relations between men and women or in the essence of the inequality of the sexes. Rather, it has roots in the primacy of the family that emanates from the complementarity of man and woman. This chapter argues that the task of modern theological anthropology is to rescue the notion of equality from the trivialization of sexual specificity that makes lobola a cause for oppression. It recognizes that the biblical hermeneutical and cultural misinterpretation of motherhood and family life has led to the fortification of oppressive structures and the justification of inequality between men and women. A proper discourse on lobola and gender equality is possible through a return to the doctrine of complementarity of the sexes. |
