Child and adult expectations may be important in influencing children's display of self-control behaviors. The Expectations for Self-Control Checklist was developed to assess children's and parents' expectations in this area. The checklist was administered to boys and girls from the first, third, and sixth grades, and their parents. The results revealed that older children reported higher expectations for self-control than younger children and that girls reported higher expectations for self-control performance than boys. It was found that the checklist could be used reliably by the adults, by all the boys, and by the third-grade girls. The findings are discussed in terms of their implications for child self-control training programs. Suggestions for future research are also offered. |
