MHPG in urine of patients with anorexia nervosa and bulimia and of healthy controls

Popis:	Urinary excretion of 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG) in 29 bulimics, 16 anorectic patients, and 12 healthy controls was measured. Bulimic patients excreted less MHPG (0.83 ± 0.05 mg/24 h) than did healthy controls (0.98 ± 0.06 mg/24 h). Urinary MHPG excretion was significantly reduced in anorectic patients (0.67 ± 0.06 mg/24 h). Plasma triiodothyronine (T3) values (milligrams/milliliter) correlated positively to urinary MHPG (milligrams/24 hours). This finding might result from the intermittent starvation practiced by bulimic patients.
