Popis: Standard methods used in the investigation of renal function have had limited application in the study of renal function of newborn mammals. This work describes a new model for the study of kidney function in newborns, the unanesthetized piglet. Use of the piglet allows measurement of renal clearances in the neonate without the complications introduced by anesthetics. Respiratory and renal parameters were constant and stable for over 2.5 hr. Quantification of renal blood flow by distribution of microspheres was reproducible and did not adversely affect glomerular filtration or electrolyte excretion. Usefulness of this preparation for the study of diuretic drugs is illustrated. Although the use of the unanesthetized piglet for evaluation of renal function is emphasized in this paper, the model should provide an effective tool for pharmacologic and physiological studies of other organ systems as well.
