Collisional absorption of the optical vortex beam in plasma

Popis: In the present paper, the inverse bremsstrahlung absorption of vortex laser beam (VLB) propagating in a collisional plasma is investigated. For this purpose, the Maxwell and the plasma hydrodynamic equations are employed to obtain the electromagnetic wave equation. Solving this equation by utilizing the eigen mode method, the dispersion relation and the absorption coefficient of VLB are obtained, and the effect of angular mode number on the absorption of VLBs is also illustrated by numerical calculations. It is shown that the absorption of twisted waves decreases significantly in homogeneous bounded plasmas compared to the waves with symmetric phase structure and, as a result, VLBs exhibit better propagation behavior than typical Gaussian beams. The present results are expected to be useful to the development of advanced particle accelerators and improvement of long-range propagation in remote sensing.
