Popis: The FST is a new type of cylindrical convergent HE device which creates well behaved gases with energy levels far above those possible with conventional HE systems. At the present time we have a well developed FST which creates high energy gases with a density of over 2 gm/cc, a particle velocity above 6 km/sec, and free expansion velocities of approximately 20 km/sec. These gases have been used to accelerate stainless steel plates to over 10 km/sec. The pressures created in the plates during acceleration exceed 1 Mbar. Development is proceeding on an advanced system to create gases with 2.5 times the energy levels of the present one. This paper discusses the principles behind the successful operation of the FST, describes the present system, and discusses the advanced system.
