The authors propose the notion of pore pressure, as generated inside concrete, while immersed and submitted to hydrostatic loads, in a similar (but slightly different) way, to the one applied in soil mechanics. The idea of total and effective stresses is subsequently developed. The analysis reported is based on an extensive research program, run for several years for ARBEM in CEBTP and CNEXO laboratories. Pore pressure effects appear to generate an early swell and a further absence of creep in immersed and water saturated concrete, thus allowing to consider an appropriate increase of E-moduli. An impact of this statement on elastic stability of concrete floaters, often governing the design concept of offshore structures, is then pointed out. |
