Researchers often need to collect additional or different types of information from survey respondents than can easily be gathered during the initial interview procedure. When this is the case, it is increasingly common to ask respondents to continue their participation by using a leave-behind measurement supplement. Time use and purchasing diaries are most common traditional leave-behinds and these are still used by some large surveys. But digital technologies have added a trove of new tools that researchers can leverage after the initial interview concludes. This chapter highlights some of the new measurement supplement opportunities presented by technological advancements and proposes directions for future research that will enable researchers to maximize the value of these technologies. |
