Popis: This study focuses on enhancing interlaminar strength of hybrid (micro/nano) carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite laminates by coating the carbon fabric (CF) layers with cellulose nanocrystals (CNC). Although carbon fibers offer one of the best strength and stiffness to weight ratio among reinforcing fibers, excellent in-plane properties of CFRP composite laminates are often damped by their inferior out-of-plane properties that may result in early delamination and catastrophic failure. In order to improve CFRP interlaminar shear strength, we coat the CF layers with CNC by immersing them in a CNC aqueous suspension bath prior to impregnation via vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM). Flexural and short beam tests were done for composites with different concentration of CNC and their results were compared.
