Popis: BACKGROUND: Based on increasing academisation of physiotherapy in Germany it is fundamental for educational institutions and lecturers to know more about the motivational structures which agitate physiotherapists already employed or still on vocational training to start a study programme at a university of applied sciences. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the motivational structures of physiotherapists taking part in academic studies in different study models in Germany. METHODS: As theoretical basis served the self-determination theory developed by Deci and Ryan . The German version of ECHELLE DE MOTIVATION DANS LES ETUDES - ETUDES AVANCeES by Vallerand et al. was used to measure the attitudes towards 7 different motivation types. RESULTS: Students at a German private university of applied sciences being already employed or still on vocational training show different motivations towards taking part in professional academic education. Both groups looked favourably upon the expected results of the study regarding future professional career development. Most of the students made widely autonomous decisions suggesting positive learning outcomes in terms of the self-determination theory. CONCLUSIONS: In the present study, motivational differences of physiotherapy students in 2 different study models at a private university of applied sciences in Germany were found. On the basis of an overall structure of autonomous motivation, already employed older students were more self-determined and intrinsically motivated than still on vocational training younger students who showed higher extrinsic motivation scores.
