Rabbitpox virus has been converted to the reactivable form by controlled heat or urea treatment (resulting in H-RP and U-RP). H-RP is rapidly inactivated by urea, and U-RP is inactivated by heat. The effect of surfaceactive reagents and of trypsin and papain on the biological activity and morphology of active and reactivable virus has also been studied. Under certain conditions, notably in the presence of low concentrations of salt, the proteolytic enzymes digest away a large part of the virus particle leaving it flattened with a well-defined central body. This change may be accomplished under conditions that diminish the reactivability of U-RP and H-RP to a slight extent only. The results have been interpreted as suggesting that the property of reactivability resides in the central body of the particle. |
