Popis: | SUMMARY This paper provides a brief overview of the origins of attachment theory and its' current relevance to early childhood research and education. The empirical component of the work reported here concerns the use of the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) with mothers in a multi-disciplinary, multi-functional early childhood setting, the Pen Green Centre for Under-Fives and Their Families, in Corby, Northamptonshire. The hypothesis was that mothers' responses to the AAI would correlate with independent ratings of their children's social and emotional well-being as measured by a previously validated set of preschool rating scales. Emotional insecurity and past experiences of loss and trauma figured prominently in the interviews obtained from 15 mothers from this socio-economically disadvantaged population. Results confirmed the hypothesis that ratings of mothers' probable past experiences and current states of mind regarding attachment were powerfully correlated with their children's well-being.
