Characteristics of Waveforms Generated by the Secondary Source Induced by Underground Explosions

Popis: It was widely accepted that the spall slapdown is the primary contributor to the non-spherical source process of underground explosions. Previous studies on its mechanism are usually based on surface waves. In this article, body waves are analyzed using the empirical Green's function to address this issue. The results show that the second arrival after the P arrival is obvious and the shape of the two-pulse is remarkably consistent in a wide azimuth range. This indicates that the second arrival is not due to any structural features but is part of the source itself, and can be explained by the mechanism of spall.
