Variation of the conformational spectrum during elongation of flexible polymers

Popis: The variation in concentration and orientation of various rotational isomers during orientational drawing of polyethylene (PE) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PETP), is followed by means of infrared spectroscopic analysis. It is shown that the balance and concentration of rotational isomers is preserved during repeated elongation of the specimen. A decrease in the number of coiled, gauche isomers is balanced by an increase in the number of extended, trans isomers. Orientational drawing of the polymers brings about substantial changes in the conformational spectrum and orientation of rotational isomers.
