Popis: The ring-opening polymerization of cyclic bis(ethylene isophthalate) (I) was carried out in the presence of various metallic compounds as catalysts. Among the polycondensation catalysts for ethylene terephthalate, antimony and tin compounds were very effective in the ring-opening polymerization of I. On the other hand, titanium, zinc, calcium, and aluminum compounds did not show high catalytic activity. The polymerization of I proceeded even at temperatures below the melting point of I. As the melting point of the resulting poly(ethylene isophthalate) was much lower than the polymerization temperature, the reaction system gradually melted in consequence of the progress of the polymerization reaction.
