Popis: This study examines a series of misericords from English stallwork of the later Middle Ages featuring images of disability, sickness, and scatological subject matter. Such iconography exemplifies tensions between the Church and medieval medical professionals, the tenuousness of exterior-interior distinctions, and aspects of medieval theological currents. Ultimately, this essay suggests that individual misericord images may seem grossly inappropriate for the sacred context of the choir, but each example served as a reminder to the viewer of the rude physical qualities of the human body and the relationship between body and soul.
