Drug synthesis is an expensive and prolonged process challenged by ethical disputes associated with in vivo models and limited outcomes. Current efforts have proved efficient for the production and modification of novel drug-delivery systems in the pharmaceutical industry. Contemporary drug-delivery systems have shown effective nanoparticle delivery of drugs (e.g., anticancer drugs, etc.) or other therapeutic molecules to the target site for different clinical applications. The upsurge in nanoparticle research and implementation calls for emerging approaches to validate investigations that are under study. Cell-based assays provide a means to assess cellular functions, system efficacy, and biological mechanisms, and are further categorized based on the functional characteristics. A brief assessment of drug-delivery systems with respect to cell-line- and cell-based assays is presented in this chapter with their limitations and possible future prospects for drug screening. |
